Hiring a Caterer

Let’s face it, it might not be easy hiring a caterer, especially if you haven’t done it before!  One thing is certain and that is that the quality of food and service from the caterer you choose will play an important part in your event’s success!

Alterio’s Catering takes pride in helping you to make your selection process as easy as possible.  We realize that your decision is an investment of your trust, time and money.  We consider those that that place their trust in us to be more than just customers, they are our partners!

Here are some things to think about when considering your options.

  • Check the availability for date of your event.  The sooner the better as caterer’s schedule can fill quickly.  We are always available by phone or email to let you know that your date will work for us.
  • Ask for length of experience, credentials and of course references.  Be sure to ask how much experience a caterer has with the specific type of event you are planning.  We are happy to provide references at any time.
  • Discuss preliminary budget and an estimated headcount.
  • Have them provide at least one sample menu.  Our “Complimentary Host Consultation” is always 100% free regardless if you choose us or not.  We are able to provide countless menu options that will fit your budget.
  • Inquire about policies regarding guaranteed minimums, services provided for you, specific hours for the event, and additional costs besides food and beverages (such as delivery and gratuity).
  • Once you’ve selected a caterer, schedule a time for a phone conversation or face to face meeting to work out all the details of your event.
  • Request a taste test. Yes, a taste test!  If you are undecided between a few foods, ask the caterer to set up a time when you can sample items that you are considering for your menu.  This is a good time to see where your food is being prepared.  We offer complimentary taste tests for booked events of 100 or more.
  • Discuss details regarding number of wait staff, their dress code, gratuities, taxes and payment schedule.  We let you know EXACTLY what your final cost will be before making a commitment.
  • Even though you may already have a business relationship, it is a good idea for both you and the caterer to put the details of your event into a contract.  It will protect you both.
  • Confirm all details of your event including menu, headcount, time and location when following-up with the caterer one week before your event.  Your caterer may follow up with you first.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions.  When you know exactly what to expect, it will put you at ease and your event will be more enjoyable for you and your guests!
